LescureCompany.com SilverStripe Implementation

Partnering with Visual Designers on a Content Management System

The Client & Challenge

San–Rafael-based afstudio design chose Quinn Interactive (QI) to do the content–management–system (CMS) implementation for their client, LescureCompany.com, a mechanical engineering firm. QI was to implement afstudio design’s information architecture and visual designs

QI delivered a CMS back end using SilverStripe, an open-source CMS and application framework out of New Zealand. The new site brings clear navigation and functionality to marketing and information-dense web pages.

Content Management

Through several project meetings, the team determined that SilverStripe would be the best solution for the LescureCompany website because of its excellent, easy administrative back end, and the framework’s flexibility to customize pages. One notable feature was 3D animated tours of mechanical systems, a hallmark skill-set of afstudio design. QI chose a lightbox feature to best present the animations. SilverStripe’s flexibility allows for added features such as the lightbox, adding visually rich and specific information to an organization’s marketing efforts.

Partnering

Quinn Interactive can partner with design firms, such as afstudio design, as well as with individual designers. Working as part of a team, QI has been comfortable in the role of project lead, offering efficient technical design, project management, fast implementation and ongoing site support. As well, QI has enjoyed the supporting role of implementing site and visual designs, adding value when necessary to all phases of a project. QI’s 15 years of experience has lent superior support to all website deliverables.

New SFCED Website Launches to Global Audience

Quinn Interactive launched a clean, easy-to-navigate website for the San Francisco Center for Economic Development that allows the three-person agency, which is housed at the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, to update their site with ease and reliability. After selecting the MODx web content management system (CMS), Quinn created the information architecture, user interface, visual design and custom programming to support the SFCED’s global mission of building and retaining business in San Francisco.

MODx is an open source CMS that has a simple administration interface allowing for fast site updates and clear content management. It is an excellent selection for small to medium sized websites. MODx was a perfect fit for SFCED’s page count and content types. It also features UTF-8 and internationalization that supports SFCED’s ChinaSF initiative, published in English and Chinese on their site.

“Finding the right CMS solution for our clients is one of our major goals,” said Phil Quinn, president of Quinn Interactive. “For SFCED, we considered several options that our developers regularly implement. MODx was the right fit for this website because of the size and scope of the project, and the skill set of the website administrators.”

The SFCED works collaboratively with the city and county of San Francisco and other like-minded organizations to promote a thriving economic climate by attracting and retaining businesses in San Francisco and promoting a business friendly environment. They have the information, resources, and relationships to assist in relocation selection decisions.

Wired.com Migrates How-to Website to MediaWiki

Pixel-perfect Implementation Eases Mission Critical Deadline

Wired.com, the online companion to Wired Magazine, is one of CondéNet’s lifestyle web sites bringing the editorial excellence of CondéNast magazines to digital media. Wired Magazine, founded in 1993 and published in San Francisco, reports on the impact of technologies on culture, the economy and politics.

Wired.com had a mission-critical deadline for migrating their Wired How-To Wiki to MediaWiki, the same open-source system used by the Wikipedia. To meet Wired’s deadline, they needed to outsource the front-end programming portion of the project because their internal resources were overloaded. The work required a pixel-perfect implementation of Wired’s designs into a set of MediaWiki templates or “skin.” In addition, advertising, analytics, and several MediaWiki extensions needed to be integrated into the standard MediaWiki software.

Effective Use of Blogs in Marketing a Hot Topic

Quinn Interactive Leads Focused Conversation for Current and Future Bloggers

The world of blogging came alive for participants of Quinn Interactive’s September 26, 2007 Meetup. Enthusiastic participants interacted with Beau Smith, Interface Design Engineer for Six Apart, and Marjorie Kase, President and CEO of Blogger Reps, both highly experienced bloggers with infectious ideas for current and new bloggers.

Beau made the case for blogging as both an informal and formal marketing communications tool. In his introductory presentation, which outlined his personal transformation as a blogger with friends and family to working professionally in the blogindustry at Six Apart, he presented several case studies that demonstrated the effective marketing impact blogs have had for major international corporations, including a CEO who used a personal blog to create buzz around new product releases and a human resources department that elicited employee feedback through internal blogs. He also reviewed several tools for effective blogging.

Marjorie built on Beau’s presentation by focusing on one blog-oriented marketing campaign for a major entertainment company. With charts and data, she demonstrated the direct impact that outreach to bloggers had on the success of a new television show. In this instance, bloggers were included in the campaign in the same way print critics have been in the past, helping to legitimize blogging for future marketing efforts.

The diverse and exciting world of blogging was on display during the Meetup. The conversation was lively and the question and answer time was stimulating.

Responsible E-mail Marketing is Stimulating Topic for Meetup

Quinn Interactive hosted its latest SF Bay Area Website Managers and Marketing Meetup (the first in its new offices) focusing on responsible e-mail marketing, reviewing legal compliance for e-marketing, and considering high-quality tools available in the marketplace.

Folks mingling and networking before the presentations

Phil Quinn, president, and Fred Condo, chief engineer, focused the discussion by highlighting the challenges and solutions for creating successful, effective and responsible online marketing. Condo stressed the compliance factor by reviewing relevant portions of the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 (Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act), the federal law governing online marketing. In particular, he stressed the critical opt-in sections that impact mail-list management and targeted recipients.

Fred talking about subscriber list best practices

Quinn highlighted two major players in the e-marketing world: CampaignMonitor and MailBuild, both services of the Australian company Freshview. Both options offer marketers easy-to-use content management and robust statistics that make e-marketing campaigns simple to implement with valuable use analysis.

The next SF Bay Area Website Marketing and Managers Meetup will address blogs and how to use them effectively in e-marketing campaigns.

Best Practices and Available Tools Options Discussed with Engaging Audience

Quinn Interactive hosted a lively and engaging meetup for marketing professionals and website managers that focused on best practices for HTML forms and three tools for easily creating and editing them. The presentation/discussion format allowed for active exchange of ideas and feedback. There was also ample time for networking and socializing.

With no WiFi connection at the venue, Quinn engineers rigged an antenna out the nearby second floor office window in order to secure web connectivity. With connections assured, Dr. Fred Condo, Quinn's chief engineer, Dr. Fred in his millieu presented a brief overview of best practices for HTML forms that addressed coding and technical standards, usability, accessibility, logic and validation, and the impact of Ajax and user experience.

Phil Quinn, founder and CEO of Quinn Interactive, compared three tools to make building forms and gathering information easy and effective. The point of reference was for marketing professional and managers who do not have HTML experience but want to control and manage website content without relying on IT. Quinn discussed the value of hosted services versus server applications. With the focusing question: Why Use Form Management, he argued for ease of use, flexibility in changing content, timeliness in posting new or updated forms, and effective implementation to gather valuable information from site visitors. The discussion addressed phpForms, Formspring and WuFoo as three options for successful form management.

The next SF Bay Area Website Marketing and Management Meetup will focus on site analytics and how to leverage tool options for increasing knowledge of site visitors.

Halter Ranch Vineyard Launches Attractive New Website

Halter Ranch Vineyard, an exciting new winery located in scenic Paso Robles, has launched an attractive, informational new website to showcase the excellence of their world-class wines and the charm of their beautiful, historic ranch property. Designed and engineered by the web artists and technology experts at Quinn Interactive, the new site is specifically crafted to highlight the Halter Ranch spirit—unique, wonderful wines and a lovely, relaxing visiting experience.

Reflecting the Halter Ranch philosophy

Halter Ranch was established in 1996 and released its first wines in the spring of 2005. The new site represents the winery's first online venture, so the selection of the right design and production team was crucial. The Quinn Interactive designers created a crisp, enticing site able to reach out to both wine enthusiasts and to wine industry grape buyers.

With its clean, artfully designed pages, complete with beautiful photography of the lovely winery and spare, yet elegant text, the site effectively creates an aura of excitement and comfort—a true testament to the beauty of the Halter Ranch grounds, the pleasure of a visit to the winery, and the distinctive quality of Halter Ranch wines. In addition, the site eloquently presents the Halter Ranch history and philosophy, and details the vineyard's environmentally conscious and sustainable wine-growing processes. A "What's New" page details the winery's recent releases, events and awards.

An effective technology component

Quinn Interactive also used their decade of expertise in web production and technology design to implement a straightforward, efficient content management system, using Macromedia Contribute. The system makes it easy for Halter Ranch website administrators to add pages and update site content as needed. In the near future, the site will be expanded to accommodate online wine sales and registration for the Halter Ranch Wine Club.

Quinn Interactive Develops Innovative Search/Information Architecture Strategy

In response to Ultimate Electronics’ requirements, Quinn Interactive utilized Commerce Search to create an innovative search experience that dramatically increased the functionality of the company’s website, both from a user and an administrator standpoint. This functionality immediately exposes users to a wide range of product information, allowing customers to easily refine their searches according to a variety of criteria, including price, brand name, model size and features. Searches can be redefined “on the fly” using filters that never provide empty results. Once users drill-down into a search, they can easily backtrack, retracing their steps to see where they’ve been. Quinn Interactive also incorporated an extremely useful TV Size Wizard feature, which allows users to input the size of their TV cabinet, or any space, to determine which TV models will fit inside.

The most groundbreaking aspect of the new website, however, stems from Quinn Interactive’s ability to create search results in an entirely new way, delivering them as XML data, rather than as standard HTML. While the user experience is not altered through this innovation, the enhancement allows Ultimate Electronics’ website administrators to change the look of their site without impacting data or functionality. In addition, Promote allows site administrators to incorporate promotions and other special features directly onto their search result pages.

Quinn Interactive Consulting Expertise Leads to More Efficient Website Focus

Before technical work on the website began, the Quinn Interactive design team worked with Phil Schmidt, internet manager of Ultimate Electronics, to determine the company’s product catalog. Together, Schmidt and the QI team developed a more streamlined taxonomy with fewer levels of product categorization. This fundamental change made the site more user-friendly by allowing viewers to move laterally between categories and pursue individual searches much more freely. QI also worked with Schmidt to help ensure that all labels and categories were as self-explanatory and accurate as possible. All of this work was designed to create a more satisfying customer experience that would bring users back to the website often, encourage them to stay on the site longer, and, of course, to create the kind of positive branding relationship that will ultimately draw more customers into Ultimate Electronics superstores.

About Ultimate Electronics

Ultimate Electronics, a private consumer electronics company, is the leader in home and car entertainment. Based in Colorado for 37 years, the company has 32 superstores in nine states, including Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Ultimate Electronics provides the industry’s most comprehensive selection of name brand consumer electronics with an emphasis on limited distribution, mid-to-upscale brands. With the industry’s leading 60-day price and service guarantee, consumers take peace of mind home with their new purchase – absolute satisfaction and assurance that customers never pay more is guaranteed. Superstores are complete with multiple home theater and audio demonstration rooms as well as service-driven sales consultants that are knowledgeable and passionate about consumer electronics. To learn more visit www.ultimateelectronics.com.

eDiets Enhances E-Commerce Search

Quinn Interactive integrates advanced guided commerce search features to help eDiets increase sales conversion rates

eDiets Inc. (NASDAQ: DIET), the premier online diet, fitness, and healthy living destination, re-launched its website with enhanced e-commerce search functions to more effectively guide online visitors to the products and information they seek. eDiets used search technology supplied by Atomz (a division of WebSideStory, Inc.). Quinn Interactive adapted and integrated the new tools into the eDiets website.

eDiets’ new online store uses Atomz’s Guided Commerce Search, featuring facets to complement a traditional online search. Facets are dynamic filters that allow users to limit their search result set by category such as price range or size. Also, facets never return an empty result set. For example, the search keyword “fitness books” shows 70 hits on eDiets’ e-commerce site. Most traditional search tools would leave the user to sift through all 70 results on their own. With eDiets’ site, however, users can choose the “Exercise Balls” facet at the top of the results page to narrow the result set to a manageable eight books about exercise balls.

Quinn Interactive CEO Phil Quinn describes Guided Commerce as “an intuitive way to shop online.” He continues, “This innovation is going to change the way people expect to search for products online.” Usability expert Fred Condo, also of Quinn Interactive, concurs. “Facets are a real advance in e-commerce usability,” said Condo. “They make customer choices highly visible, and enable customers to rapidly find what they’re looking for.”

A better user experience has yielded improved conversion rates for online merchants who use Guided Commerce. “They ought to see a substantial increase in customer conversion rate, if eDiets’ experience with the Guided Commerce search is anything like that of other sites that use it,” notes Quinn.

As part of Guided Commerce Search, eDiets also implemented Atomz’s Promote technology, which displays focused messaging to visitors. For example, a search for “Atkins Diet” triggers a promotional message about Atkins above the search results. “The Promote tool is often implemented alongside Guided Commerce,” says Quinn. “Marketing departments love this tool because it gives them a way to reach potential customers at the very point where they’re formulating a purchase decision.”

About eDiets

eDiets.com, Inc. offers professional advice, information, products and services to those seeking to improve their health and longevity. Since 1997 and as of December 31, 2004, over 1.9 million consumers worldwide have become eDiets.com members.
College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University Website Adds Content Management Infrastructure

The College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University in St. Joseph, Minnesota, now have a website that is much more easily administered, thanks to the comprehensive new content management system (CMS) designed and implemented by web development experts at Quinn Interactive. This new CMS application was a crucial element of the schools' thorough redesign of their website. The new site gives viewers immediate access to a wealth of information about academics, faculty, athletics, and campus culture and events at these two schools with total enrollment of almost 4,000 students.

The site's new CMS tools maximize functionality for site administrators and users. To ensure the CMS implementation was done as skillfully and efficiently as possible, the university brought in Quinn Interactive and Atomz Corporation to work on the project with university web designers and developers. In addition to their CMS work, Quinn Interactive provided design consulting, technical support and expert assistance during all phases of the endeavor.

Using the industry-leading CMS tools, Atomz Publish and Atomz Search, the Quinn Interactive team created CMS templates for all page types common to the new site. The templates, and the CMS tools through which they work, will allow site administrators to add news stories, press releases, class descriptions, faculty listings and many other regular features quickly and easily. The result is a dynamic website that can be kept immediately up to date with a minimum of effort.

Once the new site and CMS system had been developed the QI team turned its attention to migrating information from over ten thousand pages, with many different site characteristics and page designs, from the old Saint Benedict's website. QI developed customized scraping and data gathering tools to help gather information from the sites thousands of legacy pages, convert the data into a manageable format and import it, through Atomz, into the new site templates.

The result a fully functional website, with every page presented in an attractive, unified design. And to help assure the continued success of the site and its new CMS system, QI provided detailed training for university web administrators, teaching them how to create and manage templates and to use their new CMS tools to their maximum potential.

LEGO and Museum of Modern Art Add Powerful Online Search Functionality

Quinn Interactive's integration of Atomz Guided Commerce boosts online sales significantly

San Francisco, CA - January 18, 2005:

In November 2004, both the Lego Company and New York City's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) added powerfully enhanced search engines to their websites, installed and customized by Quinn Interactive. For both clients, Quinn Interactive made use of Atomz industry-leading Guided Commerce search tool. Together, these projects provide an excellent look into Quinn Interactive's ability to create robust search capabilities for e-commerce applications, on-line shopping and on-line catalogs for the corporate world and non-profit sector alike. Both Lego and MoMA report that their improved search engines have led directly to significant sales growth.

Lego Company

The manufacturer of the beloved Lego interlocking toys brought in Quinn Interactive to help craft a search solution that would significantly improve conversion rates. The challenge was to help customers explore more quickly and accurately among the more than 20 thousand Lego products. As an international corporation, Lego needed a search tool that could display descriptions in three languages and accommodate prices in seven currencies. Quinn Interactive provided all this and more.

The overall goal of the project was to increase online sales by helping customers search more easily. The new search interface accomplishes this goal through convenient "drill down" search facets that help guide users through their queries. Customers are provided a number of ever more specific queries criteria, including product name, age level, pricing or individual product category, assuring the success of each search.

This system ensures that users never receive the frustrating empty search result that can send them away from a site. As important, Lego's new search capabilities allow the company to cross-sell products through keyword driven page links using Atomz Promote, and to promote specific search items through merchandising rules to adjust result item relevancy based on business rules.

By testing their new search engine "side by side" with their old configuration, sending some customers to one and some to the other, Lego was able to demonstrate beyond question that the search tools were producing significantly increased viewer conversion rates. In addition, the new search functions are integrated into Lego's website metrics tools to help Lego track users and conversion trends.

Museum of Modern Art

Like Lego, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City contracted Quinn Interactive to help increase the customer conversion rates at their online store through improved search capabilities. MoMA received many of the same features and, accordingly, the same benefits—significantly increased online sales and enhanced customer-tracking capabilities. In addition, MoMA asked Quinn Interactive to create a more attractive user interface for their search results, a design that would be user friendly while fitting in with the existing look and feel of the overall MoMA store site. The new MoMA online search includes many more "facets," or search areas, that allow visitors to quickly zero in on the products they're looking for.

Quinn Interactive's Expert, Personalized Service

Lego and MoMA both received the benefit of Quinn Interactive's ten years of web production and search implementation experience. Quinn Interactive helped both clients understand how best to organize their user interface components and add the online features that would most improve their sites. In each case, the Quinn Interactive team provided in-depth, personalized service, making sure the solutions they offered were precisely appropriate to the individual organization.

The redesigned site features a sophisticated new content management system (CMS) that makes the site much more responsive, providing a significantly improved experience for the site's high volume of visitors.
