Wired.com Migrates How-to Website to MediaWiki

Pixel-perfect Implementation Eases Mission Critical Deadline

Wired.com, one of CondéNet’s lifestyle oriented web sites that bring the editorial excellence of Condé Nast magazines to digital media, outsourced their recent “How To” MediaWiki implementation to Quinn Interactive in order to supplement their workflow to meet mission-critical deadlines.

Founded in 1993 and published in San Francisco, California, Wired.com reports on the impact of technologies on culture, the economy and politics. In order to meet their deadline they needed to outsource the technical implementation piece of the project because their internal resources were overloaded. The work required a pixel perfect design implementation of the MediaWiki skin that was provided by Wired.com designers.

Working with the custom visual design and layout, Quinn Interactive implemented out-of-the-box MediaWiki functionality, along with a select number of free extensions, which met essential editorial and business requirements. These extensions included: Article-to category, a Create box, Top Ten pages, and Website iFrame. Custom page layouts were applied to the wiki navigation, user navigation, wiki page navigation and the wiki page content. Several existing functionalities were retained and integrated into the new MediaWiki. Advertising tags were added to all pages for wiki-wide visibility. Google Analytics and HBX Analytics were integrated to create wiki-wide, use-related marketing statistics. Because of the fast, efficient technical implementation, the Wired.com team was freed to focus on other aspects of the MediaWiki implementation. Due to the complexity of the site they were able to beat their launch expectations with a substantial savings on critical time and resources.
