Quinn Interactive led the design and implementation of BirdLife International’s powerful new website, turning a complex and outmoded site into a gracefully functional flagship and a potent research tool for the environmental community.

The Client

BirdLife International is an umbrella organization for groups around the world dedicated to preserving endangered bird species and protecting the environments that sustain them. Sharing information from member organizations is a major component of this mission, and the website, www.birdlife.org, is a crucial tool.

The Challenge

BirdLife had outgrown their initial website. They needed a site that could handle an increased volume and sophistication of content and provide a vastly improved user experience.

BirdLife turned to Quinn Interactive to provide a comprehensive web design strategy with a new look, a user-friendly organization, and a technological foundation to efficiently handle the site’s current requirements and future needs.

The Solutions

Visual Design

Quinn Interactive created a fresh visual design to enhance the existing BirdLife brand and underscore BirdLife’s status as the international authority on bird conservation.

Information Architecture

We built practical, efficient navigation elements into the BirdLife site, so users always know exactly where they are on the site and how to get where they want to go. Logical, automated cross-linking helps users find related information faster.

Content Management

Using Omniture Publish and SiteSearch, we provided BirdLife a sturdy, flexible CMS greatly improving the BirdLife’s ability to add content to their site—quickly and easily.

The site’s carefully tuned search engine is swift, efficient, and comprehensive, and also produces dynamic “See Also” lists that appear throughout the site.

Custom Applications

We put our expertise to work providing BirdLife with a powerful suite of custom features.

We built a power Image Management System into the site, enabling BirdLife to efficiently utilize their huge photo repository. The system tracks photo credits and usage rights, provides default captions, and automatically resizes images as thumbnails.

We also provided a custom News Alerts capability that lets users sign up for automatic email news releases.

The Results

BirdLife International now has a fully manageable website. With its  streamlined organization, rich scope and informational depth, enhanced usability, and engaging design, the BirdLife website experiences much greater traffic, yet uses much less bandwidth per page view.

In addition, www.birdlife.org is now easy to use, offering quick access to a meaningful and dynamic library of information about endangered bird species, their habitats, and the ongoing efforts to save them, provided by environmentalists on the ground all over the world.
